The Strasbourg Christmas Market

Every winter, as December approaches, the city of Strasbourg transforms into a magical wonderland bathed in golden light. Known as the “Capital of Christmas,” Strasbourg proudly hosts one of the oldest and most famous Christmas markets in Europe — the Christkindelsmärik. Established in 1570, this legendary market has become a symbol of warmth, tradition, and festive spirit, drawing visitors from around the world.
The heart of the celebration beats around Place Broglie and Place de la Cathédrale, where hundreds of wooden chalets line the cobblestone streets, each one offering a glimpse into the rich Alsatian craftsmanship. The scent of spiced mulled wine, gingerbread, and roasted chestnuts fills the air, creating an atmosphere that delights both the senses and the soul.

Strasbourg’s Gothic cathedral, with its majestic spire reaching toward the winter sky, serves as a breathtaking backdrop. Its glowing façade, illuminated by soft, golden light, reflects centuries of history and faith. Around it, visitors can find stalls selling handmade ornaments, wooden toys, candles, and delicate crystal decorations — all crafted with care by local artisans who preserve the traditions of the Alsace region.
Beyond the market stalls, the entire city dresses up for the season. The Grande Île, Strasbourg’s historic center and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, becomes a living fairytale. Every street, square, and window glows with garlands, stars, and shimmering lights. The Great Christmas Tree on Place Kléber towers proudly above the square, often reaching over thirty meters high — a symbol of hope and generosity. Beneath its branches, charitable associations collect gifts and donations for those in need, reminding everyone of the true spirit of Christmas: sharing and compassion.
